Title: The Role of Artificial Intelligence in Translation

Abstract: Translation is a systematic process that attempts to convey verbal meanings from one language to another. This has primarily been the responsibility of human translators over time. However, this is now changing due to technological advancements, more specifically, the emergence of machine translation. The application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology has been very impactful in narrowing down linguistic divides and easing the challenges of a multilingual context. Due to its ever-growing potential, AI in translation remains a fascinating yet sensitive topic. The reason behind this is the fact that translation is more than just replacing certain words of a language with their counterparts; it includes an understanding of the context, proper explanation, and adaptation to a cultural framework. "The Role of Artificial Intelligence in Translation" gives a thorough insight into translation as a theoretical and practical field of study. It analyses the role of AI in contemporary translation and what it means for modern professional translators and international communication. Along with the different methods used to apply artificial intelligence in translation, there are, of course, different tools. The most famous tool for using artificial intelligence in translation is certainly Google Translate. Every person with access to the internet has probably used Google Translate at least once in their life. Although when we talk about machine translation, we would not immediately think of ChatGPT (a natural language processing tool driven by artificial intelligence technology that can answer various questions and help with tasks, such as composing emails or code), however, along with all the other capabilities it provides, ChatGPT is actually trained to translate. Methodologically, this research adopts a comparative and evaluative approach. It involves a mixed-methods analysis such as qualitative analysis of selected translated texts from both AI-based tools and human translators, focusing on contextual accuracy, cultural sensitivity, and syntactic structure, and quantitative evaluation using established metrics such as BLEU (Bilingual Evaluation Understudy) scores to assess translation quality. This paper aims to systematically investigate the advantages and disadvantages of AI-based translation relative to accuracy and dependability. Furthermore, it contrasts machine translation with human translation, ultimately addressing the central question of whether artificial intelligence is capable of fully replacing human translators.
