Title: THE CHARACTER OF THE 1968 DEMONSTRATIONS IN KOSOVO AND MACEDONIA - COMPARATIVE ASPECTS OF THE 1968 DEMONSTRATIONS IN EUROPE

Abstract: The year 1968 is known as the year of the students’ movement, which involved students from well-known universities in France, Germany and England. In this wave of turmoil, students of the "new left" were involved, who demanded better social policies at the university and, certainly, a better social order. The main purpose of this paper coincides with possible interrelation of Albanian demonstrations in the former Yugoslavia with those of Europe, regardless of the fact that the demands of Albanians in Kosovo and Macedonia did not bring any immediate change; however, they preceded the constitutional changes of 1974. Meanwhile, the Albanian student movement in Kosovo and Macedonia, reflected very little, if not at all, these requirements and goals. The student demonstrations of Albanians in 1968 in Kosovo and Macedonia were completely autochthonous and original in their character. They were created by the new academic elite and Albanian students in Prishtina. They were supported by the people. They had clear demands for full emancipation and political rights of Albanians in Yugoslavia. They were envisioned at the "university" and brought the university, but also the national flag. Moreover, they paved the way for the constitutional changes based on which in 1974 Kosovo gained a partial political autonomy.
