Title: THE DEMONSTRATIONS OF TETOVO (1968) CONTINUATION OF KOSOVO DEMONSTRATIONS

Author: Ramadani, Fehari
Author: Selmani, Memet

Abstract: The Tetovo demonstrations of December 1968 were a continuation of those developed in Kosovo a month earlier. They were an expression of dissatisfaction with the policy that the federal state pursued against the Albanian population in the occupied territories. Demonstrators asked for more national rights and equal treatment with other SFRY people, but from local and republican institutions in Tetovo and Macedonia, their demands were classified as chauvinist, separatist, directed against brotherhood-union, state order etc. Neither institution, whether local, republican, or federal, nor any newspaper of the time, discussed about the causes that led to the development of demonstrations. Everywhere demonstrators were accused of being enemies of brotherhood-union and the state. The aims of this paper are focused on the analysis of the circumstances that led to the protests in December 1968 in Tetovo, although the causes of the 1968 demonstrations were the result of the severe situation in which Albanians lived. Through the development of demonstrations, the aim was to improve the political, economic, cultural situation.
