Title: THE EFFECTS OF THE ANGIOTENSIN-CONVERTING ENZYME (ACE) GENOTYPE ON BODY WEIGHT AND BODY FAT MASS FOLLOWING MEDIUM & LONG DURATION AEROBIC PERFORMANCE DEVELOPMENT IN ARMY RECRUITS

Author: Cerit, Mesut

Abstract: Purpose: This study deals with the evaluation of the effects of ACE genotype on body weight and body fat mass following medium & long duration aerobic performance development in Army recruits. Methods: The study group consisted of 289 male subjects non-elite Turkish army recruits. All subjects had undergone similar workout routine per day and 6 days a week for 12 weeks. All subjects were measured for certain body mass and body composition variables both at the beginning of the Boot Camp and after the accomplishment of the 12-week workout period. Body weight and body composition were measured with the bio impedance technique using a “Tanita TBF 300M” electronic scale. ACE gene polymorphisms were examined by PCR method. Results: All ACE genotype groups have shown considerable progress in the 12-week workout cycle as compared to the entry levels (P < 0.001 for all). The dispersion of genotypes in the whole group was 16.00 % II, n = 45; 49.50 % ID, n = 139; 34.05 % DD, n = 97. Conclusion: In this study, it was observed that DD genotype has the highest difference among groups in terms of body and fat mass and fat percentage differences following high volume and low intensity type of medium and long duration aerobic endurance training.
