Title: Impact of the COVID 19 pandemic on tourism in the Republic of North Macedonia in regards of potential tourist
Author: Zakoski, Ilija
Abstract: Since the World Health Organization declared a coronavirus pandemic in March 2020, national governments around the world have closed non-core businesses and restricted movement. In just a few weeks, the tourism industry came to a sudden halt and workers lost their income. The government used protocols to regulate the operation of catering facilities, which was a reason for the dissatisfaction of tourism workers. However, the government's stimulation of domestic tourism with vouchers for people with low-income was successful. In RNM during the period from January-September 2020, compared to the same period in 2019, there was a decrease of 60.3% of the total number of tourist arrivals. For domestic tourists, the decrease was by 20.4% while for foreigners 83.8% according to the data from the State Statistical Office. The largest influx of arrivals of domestic tourists is recorded in the period from June-September 2020, as a result of vouchers to stimulate domestic tourism. How potential tourists assess the situation in tourism in RNM during the Covid 19 pandemic in 2020 is the aim of this paper. The data were obtained through a survey questionnaire from 72 respondents conducted on Popova Shapka in September 2020. The obtained data are statistically processed using the computer software for spreadsheets Microsoft Excel. The data from the analysis showed that 52% of respondents believe that government protocols are respected, 40.3% that they have a positive impact on tourism, 61.1% of respondents believe that vouchers have a positive impact on domestic tourism. In 2020, according to 63.8% of the respondents, other habits in terms of tourism have been created that will affect tourism in the period after the Covid 19 pandemic.
