Title: Can reading authentic texts improve EFL learners’ vocabulary knowledge?

Author: Daskalovska, Nina

Abstract: This paper presents the results of a study on vocabulary acquisition through reading an authentic text from two input modes: reading only and reading plus listening. The participants in the study were 51 first-year English major students in Macedonia who read eight chapters of the novel Pride and Prejudice. They were tested on their knowledge of 51 target words before the treatment, immediately after the treatment and three weeks later. The results show that both input modes (reading-only and reading-while-listening) resulted in vocabulary learning gains and that there was relatively little decay over the three-week period for both groups. However, the reading-while-listening group demonstrated greater learning gains (4.64 words) than the reading-only group (3.13 words), which indicates that learners can benefit more from simultaneous listening and reading, but that reading without listening can also produce significant learning gains.
